NICE AU 1860-C HALF EAGLE

Variety 1.

The 1860-C is the second to last half eagle made at the Charlotte mint. Of the 14,813 struck, there are likely more than 200 known, mostly in the EF40 to AU53 range.

As on all known examples, this piece shows an improperly annealed reverse and as a result the detail is not as sharp as on the obverse. I grade this example at least AU53 if not AU55 as it shows a good deal of natural luster and far less wear than one would expect to see on a coin grade "50."

The last two AU50 1860-C half eagles to sell at auction--both slabbed by NGC--brought $3,525 (in 2015) and $4,113 (in 2014).
