NICE EXTREMELY FINE 1847-D HALF EAGLE: PCGS AND CAC
Variety 19-I.
The 1847-D is generally lumped in with the most common date half eagles from Dahlonega but I find it to be underrated. It is an especially hard issue to locate with original color and natural surfaces, no matter what grade.
This warm russet example shows plenty of dirt in the recesses of the obverse and the reverse. It is well detailed and choice save for a small old scrape running outwards from the chin of Liberty into the field.
Only two PCGS EF40 1847-D half eagles have sold at auction in over a decade and no CAC approved EF40 examples from either service have yet to cross the block.
An affordable D mint half eagle with character and good eye appeal.
CAC has approved three in this grade with 13 finer.
