Coin Description

VERY RARE CIVIL WAR ISSUE 1864 HALF EAGLE

The 1864 ranks among the very rarest Liberty Head half eagles made for circulation by the Philadelphia mint. Of the 4,170 struck there are an estimated 60-70 known in all grades. The present example is the lowest graded 1864 half eagle but it is a coin that oozes character as you can tell by the image.

This coin was likely a pocket piece as it shows extensive but very even wear. The surfaces are lightly marked and show pleasing natural russet hues with a small area of discoloration at 8:00 barely noticeable. I grade this coin F12/VG8 as the obverse shows a full, sharp LIBERTY and a full rim. If this coin could only talk….

There are no comparable as the next lowest graded at PCGS is a VF20.

This is a coin I really wrestled with selling as it scores so high on the DW Coolness Chart ™ that I came very close to keeping it for myself!

CAC has approved this one coin in VG with another seven finer.
