A COLLECTOR GRADE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1842-D LARGE DATE HALF EAGLE
Variety 8-G.
The 1842-D Large Date is the second rarest half eagle from this mint after the celebrated 1861-D but it is the rarest in high grades. It is almost never seen in collector grades with natural color and choice surfaces.
This dirt-encrusted Choice VF example is fresh to the market and it is among the warmest, most pleasing collector grade 1842-D Large date half eagles that I have offered. It shows even natural green-gold color and both sides are free of serious marks. Survivors of this date are almost always cleaned or riddled with marks and you could search for years and not find a more pleasing VF example than this one.
Only two PCGS VF35′s have appeared at auction since the beginning of 2005. Stacks Bowers 11/11: 9472 sold for $4,600 while Bowers and Merena 1/09: 1242 realized $5,750.
This is a rare opportunity for the Dahlonega collector on a limited budget to own a really special example of one of the true rarities from this mint for an affordable amount.
CAC has graded one in VF35 and two finer for a total of just four in all grades. DWN has “made” every single one of these!
