Coin Description

CHOICE 1840 HALF EAGLE

Narrow Mill variety; not designated by PCGS.

The 1840 is numismatically significant as the first Philadelphia half eagle with the redesigned Liberty Head. It is common in AU grades but most seen lack originality and eye appeal.

This choice example is toned to a deep, rich russet and would surely grade at least AU55–if not even higher–were it not for some old marks around the date. There is a good amount of luster on both sides and the reverse is very choice.

The last CAC approved PCGS AU53 1840 half eagle to sell at auction brought $999 as HA 1/15: 11391.

CAC has approved 5 in this grade with 21 finer.
