Coin Description
ICONIC 1854-D THREE DOLLAR GOLD: PCGS/CAC AU50
The 1854-D three dollar is one of the most popular standalone Southern branch mint issues. It is the only three dollar from this mint and it is a rare coin with an original mintage of just 1,120 coins. As recently as a few years ago, you could find decent 1854-D Threes in my inventory on a regular basis. The supply has really dried up and now it is a rare occurrence for me to offer one; especially with all the bells and whistles.
This fresh-to-the-market example is an uncommonly “meaty” AU50 with very choice surfaces, nice overall detail and pleasing natural light green color. There are virtually no marks which are not mint-made and unlike most which have been available to collectors in recent years, this piece isn’t scrubbed to death and/or comically overgraded.
No PCGS AU50 1854-D Three has sold at auction since Heritage 1/07: 3455 which brought $34,500. A non-CAC PCGS AU53 sold for $38,775 as Stacks Bowers 3/14: 4070.
This is the first nice 1854-D Three I’ve offered for sale on my website in close to two years and I expect that multiple collectors will be interested in this piece.
