UNDERVALUED 1860 EAGLE

The 1860 eagle tends to be overshadowed by its rare Civil War counterparts but this is a scarce issue with an estimated 150-200 known from the original mintage of 15,055 business strikes. AU pieces are not rare from a numerical standpoint but most of those in 50-55 holders have been dipped and are excessively abraded.

This is a choice, attractive example with natural russet color which deepens towards the borders. The strike is sharp except for the curl above the ear of Liberty while the surfaces are uncommonly clean for the issue.

The only other PCGS/CAC AU50 1860 eagle sold for $2,990 as Heritage 2011 ANA: 5642.

This represents good value for the No Motto Liberty Head eagle collector on a more modest budget.

CAC has approved 2 with seven 7 finer.
