GEM 1861 GOLD DOLLAR WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1861 is one of two common Civil War gold dollars from the Philadelphia mint but it is seen less often in Gem than its counterpart the 1862. Most of the coins graded MS65 are not CAC-worthy due to excessive marks or a lack of originality.
This frosty gem shows nice natural medium orange-gold color. It is a later die state with considerable mint-made swelling at the lower obverse; this does not correspond to the reverse. Just a few small marks can be seen under light magnification and the naked-eye appearance is excellent.
The last two APR's for PCGS/CAC MS65 gold dollars are $2,585 in September 2015 and $2,820 in June 2015.
This would make a great addition to a Civil War gold set and it is good value as a PCGS/CAC MS66--if available--would bring in the $6,000-7,000 range.
CAC has approved 14 in MS65 with 6 finer.
