RARE AND POPULAR 1870-CC HALF EAGLE

Just 7,675 half eagles were made at the Carson City mint in 1870 and this issue--with its multiple levels of demand--has long been recognized as the key issue in the CC half eagle set. Around 65-75 1870-CC half eagles exist and they are found mainly in lower grades.

This evenly worn example is well detailed for the grade and shows natural light green-gold color with a slightly two-tone appearance on the obverse. There are a few light old scratches in the left obverse field but the overall quality of this coin is quite pleasing for the grade.

The only VF30 1870-CC half eagle to ever sell at auction realized $21,150 as Heritage 2/16: 3384; the coin had a detracting lamination of Liberty's face and was not as visually pleasing as the piece offered here.

As I mentioned above, this issue is in demand from a number of sources and there are clearly not enough "affordable" 1870-CC half eagles to go around.
