NGC AU58 1848-C HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

In properly graded AU58 and higher grades, the 1848-C is a much scarcer coin than its population figures would suggest. Most of the AU58's that I have seen were well overgraded and would not be approved by CAC if submitted.

This piece has been off the market for many years and it is a very solid coin for the grade with minimal wear and nearly full luster. It is well struck and has choice surfaces with just a few scuffs seen in the lower left obverse. The coloration is a very pleasing natural deep yellow-gold which is correct for this issue and indicative of a coin which hasn't been dipped or enhanced.

Another CAC approved NGC AU58 1848-C half eagle sold for $6,325 as Heritage 6/11: 4635 and it was not, in my opinion, as choice as the current offering. A non-CAC NGC AU58 moore recently brought a strong $8,050 as Stacks Bowers 2011 ANA: 9398.

With Uncirculated pieces seemingly unavailable, this is likely as nice an example of this date as will be available in the foreseeable future.
