Large Date variety.
Varieties of 1842-C half eagle are known with a Small Date and a Large Date. The latter is more available than the former but it is a scarce issue in its own right and a date which is especially difficult to locate with natural color and choice surfaces.
This is one of the most original 1842-C Large Date half eagles I have seen with deep, attractive amber and green-gold coloration seen on both sides. The surfaces are clean and choice and some dirt can be seen in the crevices of the lettering.
Two non-CAC PCGS EF45 1842-C Large Date half eagles have sold at auction in 2016 and they realized $2,820 and $3,250, respectively.
CAC has approved 2 in this grade and only 4 finer.
