AFFORDABLE COLLECTOR GRADE 1839-C HALF EAGLE

Like its counterpart the 1839-D, this issue is numismatically significant. The 1839-C is a one year type and it is the only Liberty Head half eagle from this mint with the mintmark positioned on the obverse. The 1839-C is actually scarcer in terms of overall availability than the 1839-D and it is rarely offered for sale in affordable collector grades.

This even olive-gold example is well-defined with a good degree of sharpness seen at the centers. The surfaces show some old marks of which the most noticeable is located in the inner right obverse field. The overall eye appeal is excellent and this is a pleasing coin for the grade.

This exact coin is the only 1839-C half eagle graded EF40 by PCGS to sell at auction since early 2009; see below for the provenance.

I don't often handle affordable examples of this date and this likely the best piece currently available for less than $5,000.

Ex Stacks Bowers 3/17: 4425 where it sold for $4,230.
