VERY SCARCE UNCIRCULATED 1848-D QUARTER EAGLE

Variety 10-M.

The 1848-D tends to be a well-made issue and its relative availability in higher grades (at least through MS62) make it an ideal type coin for the collector who is seeking a single Dahlonega quarter eagle for type purposes.

Usually, Dahlonega coins graded MS60 are miserable but this coin is a notable exception. It is frosty and free of wear and, to be honest, I could see this in an MS61 holder and not bat an eyelash. The strike is sharp for the issue and the color is a pleasing nice light yellow-gold.

The only MS60 1848-D quarter eagle to sell at auction since 2010 was this coin--in an NGC holder--while a PCGS MS60 brought a very strong $11,500 as Heritage 1/05: 8559.

Ex Heritage 10/16: 5453 where it brought $6,463 as an NGC MS60; earlier Lot 5794 in Heritage's 2010 ANA sale where it realized $6,613.
