CHOICE PCGS AU55 1840-O QUARTER EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

The 1840-O is a numismatically significant issue as the first New Orleans issue employing the new Liberty Head design. It is scarce in the higher AU grades and it becomes rare in full Mint State.

This very lustrous yellow-gold example shows little actual wear but it is somewhat weakly struck as is typical for this issue. There is a mint-made retained lamination between stars one and two which is not detracting.

No CAC approved PCGS AU55 1840-O quarter eagle has sold at auction. A nice non-CAC piece--graded by PCGS-- sold for $3,055 as Heritage 10/16: 4338.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 9 finer.
