CHALLENGING PCGS/CAC EF40 1875-CC EAGLE

Variety 1-A.

Of the 7,715 struck, there are an estimated 100-125 known 1875-CC eagles and many are well-worn as this issue saw intensive use in local commerce. The typical EF 1875-CC is excessively abraded, bright from repeated cleanings and softly impressed.

This piece is uncommonly well detailed for the issue with decent central definition but with the usual small, easily overlooked mintmark. The surfaces lack the typical deep, detracting marks and there are hints of mint luster seen beneath the medium russet color.

There have been three PCGS EF40 1875-CC eagles sold at auction since March 2014 and the present piece, which brought $10,575 as Stacks Bowers 2016 ANA: 3372, was far and away the nicest of these.

A nicer 1875-CC eagle, if you can find one, will cost at least $25,000.

CAC has approved just this one coin in EF40 with four finer.
