Fewer than 200 examples of the 1872-S eagle exist from an original mintage of 17,300. This date is seen most often in the EF and lower AU and many survivors are heavily abraded and have been harshly cleaned or brightened.
This is a textbook EF45 with even wear, nice surfaces and pleasing natural russet coloration on both the obverse and the reverse.
Only one PCGS EF45 1872-S eagle has appeared at auction since 2011 and it realized $1,645 as Heritage 7/15: 4537. It was not approved by CAC.
At less than $2,000 this coin offers a lot of bang for the buck.
