ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1870-S EAGLES

The pre-1877 With Motto eagles from San Francisco don't get the attention lavished on their No Motto counterparts and as a result, many are overlooked. This is clearly the case with the 1870-S, a date which gets little recognition but which has a surviving population of less than 100. This date becomes really scarce in AU55 and I am aware of only to in AU58: this coin and Bass 3: 370 which last sold in 2002.

Housed in an old green label holder, this frosty slider shows medium orange-gold color on both sidesand very little actual wear. The surfaces are minimally abraded and a small black line at the central reverse is a mint-made grease stain.

An NGC AU55 example of this date just sold for $14,100 as Heritage 9/16: 14152.

The only nicer 1870-S eagle is the Eliasberg/Bass PCGS MS61 which sold for a strong $36,800 all the way back in 2000. An important coin for the specialist.

Ex Heritage 3/14: 30374 where it sold reasonably for $12,925.
