CONDITIONALLY SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU55 1840 EAGLE

While common in the EF40 to AU53 range, properly graded AU55 to AU58 1840 eagles are rare and this date is all but unavailable finer. A nice PCGS MS61 recently sold for a strong $35,250 in the Heritage 9/16 auction.

This fresh to the market example was sourced from a European bank and it has a very pleasing "Euro" appearance with deep golden-russet color. However, this piece lacks the dark highlighting which many gold coins from Europe acquire when stored in a vault. This piece has clean surfaces, crisp detail and terrific overall eye appeal for the date and grade.

Only two PCGS AU55 1840 eagles have sold at auction since 2004 and the nicer of the two brought $3,450 as Stacks 8/10: 5120.

For most serious collectors of Liberty Head eagles, this will be the 1840 which they will want to grace their collection with.

CAC has approved just this 1 coin in AU55 with 3 finer.
