OVERLOOKED 1870 QUARTER EAGLE

Despite a small original mintage of only 4,520 business strikes, the 1870 quarter eagle is an overlooked issue. There are an estimated 100-125 pieces known and the typical 1870 grades EF45 to AU55 but it is characterized by heavy abrasions and a decided lack of originality.

This semi-prooflike example shows deep orange-gold splashes over moderately abraded surfaces. It is lightly worn and pleasing with an excellent naked-eye appearance.

Only one PCGS AU55 1870 quarter eagle has sold at auction since 2011 and it realized $1,293 as Heritage 3/14: 10555. It was not CAC approved.

This coin represents exceptional value at under $2,000.

CAC has approved just this one in AU55 with four finer.
