The 1839-O is the only collectable Capped Bust half dollar from New Orleans and its status makes it extremely popular with many types of collectors. It is scarce in AU grades and it is actually quite hard to find with natural color and choice surfaces.
This dark grey example has deep old "tarnish-y" toning over unmolested surfaces. This is one of the few AU 1839-O halves I am aware of which can be termed as "original."
Other than this piece, no PCGS/CAC AU53 has sold at auction.
A great collector coin.
CAC has approved just 2 in this grade with 24 finer.
