RARE PCGS AU58 1871-S HALF EAGLE

The 1871-S is more available than many of the 1860's San Francisco With Motto half eagles but it is still a scarce issue with only 125-150 known from the original 25,000 struck. This date becomes rare in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated with just two or three known including a PCGS MS63+ which is originally from the Bently collection.

This lustrous slider is lightly worn but it has a typical soft strike at the centers which unfairly gives the impression of friction on the neck feathers. The surfaces show just a few light, scattered abrasions beneath subtle rose and orange-gold hues.

Only one PCGS AU58 1871-S half eagle has sold at auction since late 2000 and it realized $4,725 as Stacks Bowers 2/13: 4220.

If available, an Uncirculated 1871-S half eagle would cost in excess of $15,000.
