CONDITION CENSUS 1867 HALF EAGLE

Of the 6,870 half eagles dated 1867 which were made for circulation, the majority were melted and today fewer than 75 are known, mostly in the EF40 to AU50 range. This date is very rare in the higher AU grades and I know of just two in Uncirculated including a PCGS MS61 I sold to a specialist a few years ago.

This example shows no real wear but, as is typical for this date, the surfaces are somewhat "scuffy" as a result of rough handling. There is copious frosty luster seen on both sides below natural rose and light orange-gold hues.

The last PCGS AU58 1867 half eagle to sell at auction brought $9,200 as Heritage 5/04: 9499 and an NGC AU58 sold for $6,463 as Heritage 9/16: 14089; the first auction appearance for an NGC AU58 in over a decade.

In my opinion, the population figures for this date in AU58 are well-inflated by resubmissions and this PCGS AU58 is the first nice 1867 half eagle which I have offered for sale in some time.
