CAC APPROVED CHOICE AU 1859-D HALF EAGLE

Variety 44-HH; Medium D mintmark. Not designated by NGC.

The 1859-D has the second lowest mintage figure of any half eagle from this mint but it is not as rare overall as one might expect. Most of the examples in AU55 and 58 holders are either overgraded or highly processed and nice examples are very hard to locate.

This is a textbook Choice AU D mint half eagle with much original light green-gold color over mostly frosty surfaces. The strike is typical for the date with some slight weakness at the centers but this is more than made up for by the overall lack of marks and eye appeal.

Only two NGC AU55 1859-D half eagles have sold since the 2011 and both were not approved by CAC. One realized $4,553 in 2014 while the other hammered for $4,600.

This coin is nice enough to fit into nearly any high quality date set of Dahlonega half eagles.

CAC has approved three in this grade with seven finer.
