Fewer than 100 examples are known from a mintage of just 13,000 pieces. Lower grade pieces are seen more often than for the 1855-O and 1856-O half eagles but seldom with natural color and choice surfaces.
This example seems more like an EF40 than a VF35 from its naked-eye appearance and the surfaces are covered with appealing rich orange-gold hues.
Two PCGS VF35 1857-O half eagles have sold at auction in the past decade: this one in late 2012 for $1,840 (without a CAC sticker) and another in 2008 for $1,955.
An affordable but legitimately scarce coin.
CAC has approved 1 in this grade with 6 finer.
