RARE PCGS AU55 1856-O HALF EAGLE

The rarity of this date is not widely known but the 1856-O half eagle is very challenging to locate in AU55 and it is quite rare above this. Only a handful of Uncirculated coins exist and I recently bought the finest known--an NGC MS62--for $25,850 inthe Heritage 9/16 sale.

This fresh-to-the-market examples shows a better strike than normal with less flatness on the stars. The surfaces are lightly marked and semi-reflective with attractive natural lime-gold color seen on both sides.

Only one PCGS AU55 1856-O half eagle has sold at auction since March 2004 and it was a low-end example which sold cheaply for $5,463 as Heritage 11/11: 4308. In November 2008, an NGC AU55 sold for $5,750.

This date is almost never seen in grades higher than this (the last PCGS 58 to sell at auction was back in 2005) making this a seemingly good fit for an advanced set of New Orleans half eagles.
