Variety 38-CC. Medium D mintmark; variety not attributed by NGC.

The 1855-D is the third rarest half eagle from the Dahlonega mint after the 1842-D Large Date and the 1861-D. It is not often available in AU grades and when it is, examples tend to be unoriginal and unappealing.

This choice, fresh example has excellent eye appeal for the date and grade with rich natural russet color on the obverse and, to a greater extent, the reverse. The strike is slightly flat at the central obverse as is typical for this issue while the reverse is sharper and choice. Both sides are free of significant marks and the reverse is exceptional.

This is an extremely scarce variety in this grade which typically commands a premium when it trades amongst knowledgeable specialists. There are no relevant auction records for this date or variety in AU50.

CAC has approved this one coin in AU50 with 5 finer.
