RARE CAC APPROVED NGC AU58 1851-O HALF EAGLE

The 1851-O is similar in rarity to the 1846-O half eagle. It is most often seen below the low AU range and it is quite rare in properly graded AU58. In Uncirculated, this date is very rare and very expensive.

This lovely fresh-to-the-market slider shows attractive natural russet colors on both the obverse and the reverse. It is much better struck than normal with just cursory weakness seen at the centers and the surfaces are very clean with no detracting marks. I can't recall having seen a finer AU58 example of this date.

No CAC approved AU58 1851-O half eagle has ever sold at auction. Two AU58's have sold since 2011 (one slabbed by NGC, the other by PCGS) and each coin realized $6,463.

Unless you are patient and deep-pocketed and are waiting for one of the very infrequent appearances of an Uncirculated 1851-O half eagle, this is your best shot at a great example.

CAC has approved just this one coin in AU58 with two finer (MS61 and MS62).
