NICE PCGS/CAC AU53 1846-D/D HALF EAGLE

Variety 17-J.

The 1846-D/D is among the more spectacular varieties ever produced at the Dahlonega mint and on this piece both of the mintmark punches so clearly to the naked eye. This variety is scarce in properly graded AU53 to AU55 and most examples in this range have been brightened.

This lustrous, sharply impressed example has no significant marks below its natural russet color. It shows light, even wear and I have seen inferior pieces in AU55 holders.

No PCGS AU53 has sold at auction since 2006 and the most recent NGC AU53--without CAC approval-was bid up to $4,230 as Heritage 10/16: 4118.

This is the best available quality for this variety in the $5,000 price range and it is a reallypleasing coin for the date and grade.

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with only 2 finer.
