SUPERB CHOICE AU 1846-D/D HALF EAGLE

Variety 17-J; incorrectly designated as "1846-D" by NGC.

Varieties of 1846-D half eagle exist with a Normal D and a spectacular blundered mintmark. The 1846-D/D is the more available of the two but it is in demand due to the spectacular repunching. It is extremely difficult to locate in Choice AU with natural color and surfaces.

This coin was assigned its unusual plus grade on account of its lovely natural orange-gold color and extremely choice surfaces. It has not been cleaned or brightened as have so many 1846-D/D half eagles and I could easily see this coin in a 58 holder some day given its high level of eye appeal.

A PCGS/CAC 1846-D/D half eagle brought $4,935 as Heritage 2016 ANA: 5857. While very nice, it was not as choice as the present coin.

This is a really attractive example which would be very difficult to improve upon.

CAC has approved two in this grade with just one finer (MS61).

Ex Heritage 9/16: 14067 (as NGC AU55) where it brought $5,405.
