RARE AND POPULAR PCGS/CAC AU55 1845-O HALF EAGLE

Variety 1; Repunched 18.

The 1845-O is a scarce date whose overall rarity is most similar to the 1851-O in the New Orleans No Motto half eagle series. The 1845-O is very difficult to locate in the higher AU grades and most seen in AU55 (and AU58) holders are not choice.

This lightly worn piece shows a good deal of luster on both sides and the strike is very sharp with virtually full details seen on both sides. The color is a pleasing natural gold with some rose highlights seen at the borders. The surfaces are clean with just a few small marks consistent with the assigned grade seen in the fields.

Only two PCGS AU55 1845-O half eagles have sold at auction since 2000.

Please note that what appear to be scratches on the obverse are on the holder, not the coin.

CAC has approved 4 in this grade with 11 finer.

Ex Stacks Bowers Blue Moon sale (March 2017) where it realized $5,405.
