In terms of overall rarity, the 1844-C is one of the scarcer half eagles from Charlotte. It is not often seen above EF45 and most of the coins I have seen which fall into the AU range are not original or choice.
This fresh-to-the-market example exhibits lovely deep natural russet hues with underlying bursts of reddish-gold. The surfaces are exceptional for the issue with no marks of note. A fairly heavy die crack through the first A in AMERICA is seen on the reverse.
NO CAC approved AU50 1844-C has ever sold at auction and the last two AU50 examples were sold in 2014; an NGC piece sold for $4,113 while a PCGS coin realized $4,700.
An important coin for the date collector of Charlotte half eagles.
CAC has approved just this one coin in AU50 with five finer.
