RARE COLLECTOR GRADE 1842-C SMALL DATE HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Small Date variety.

The 1842-C Small Date has long been recognized as the key issue in the Charlotte half eagle series. There are fewer than 75 known, mostly in the EF40 to AU53 range. Collector grade pieces are not often seen and most examples in the VF range are damaged or otherwise problematical.

While well worn, this piece presents nicely for the grade. It shows pleasing russet color which deepens at the edges and the surfaces are smooth and free of serious marks. The strike is a bit weak on some of the stars while the centers are well defined. The overall appearance is quite pleasing.

The last PCGS VF30 1842-C Small Date half eagle to sell at auction is this exact coin; see the pedigree below for more information.

If you collect this series and you don't have the budget for a high grade 1842-C Small Date, this piece is a wonderful combination of eye appeal and relative affordability.

CAC has approved two in this grade with 10 finer.

Ex Heritage 1/12: 1166 where it sold for $12,650.
