LOVELY PCGS/CAC MS63 1808 HALF EAGLE IN AN OLD GREEN LABEL HOLDER
BD-3, R-4. Close 5D, not designated by PCGS.
As a date, the 1808 is seen more often than its counterpart the 1808/7. The Normal Date becomes very scarce in properly graded MS63 and it is seldom seen finer than this.
Housed in an old green label holder, this piece is notable for its natural glowing luster and its sharp strike. The color is a rich yellow-gold hue shading to green-gold. There are a few old hairlines in the left obverse field which limit the grade but I have seen inferior, washed-out examples of this type in MS64 holders.
This exact coin (see below for its pedigree) is the only CAC approved MS63 1808 half eagle to sell at auction in a number of years.
This would make a great type example for the collector seeking a single high grade Capped Bust Left half eagle for a nice US gold type set.
CAC has approved 5 in this grade with just 2 finer.
Ex Heritage 2017 FUN: 5861 where it brought $30,550.
