CHOICE AU 1806 KNOBBED 6 HALF EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
BD-6, R-2.
The 1806 Knobbed 6 is likely the single most available early half eagle, at least of the Capped Bust Right type. While readily available in AU55, few of these pieces are nice enough for the grade to qualify for approval at CAC.
This choice piece has an unusual semi-brassy appearance which is no doubt the result of storage. Its intense yellow-gold color is contrasted by deeper hues on the high spots and is given warmth by considerable underlying luster. There are a few small ticks in the obverse fields but this piece lacks appreciable wear and is really "meaty" for the grade.
The last CAC approved AU55 1806 Knobbed 6 half eagle to sell at auction was an NGC coin which sold for a strong $13,513 as Newman V: 3280 in Heritage's 11/14 sale.
This would make an ideal type coin for the collector searching for a lightly circulated Capped Bust Right half eagle.
CAC has approved 16 in this grade with 68 finer.
