RARE PCGS/CAC 1855-C QUARTER EAGLE

The 1855-C is the second rarest Charlotte quarter eagle from the standpoint of overall rarity. Only 3,677 were made and around 100 or so are known. While sometimes seen in Uncirculated, this date is extremely hard to find in EF45 to AU53 grades, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.

This fresh-to-the-market example is uncommonly well-struck and it has a refreshingly natural appearance with pleasing deep, even russet hues seen on both sides. The surfaces are very clean and lustrous and I don't think this coin would look out of place in an AU55 holder.

The last PCGS AU53 to sell at auction brought $4,887 in Heritage's October 2012 auction and an NGC AU53 realized $5,581 in that firm's August 2012 auction.

This is the nicest circulated 1855-C quarter eagle that I have handled in some time and it deserves to reside in a stellar collection of Charlotte quarter eagles.

CAC has approved just this 1 coin in AU53 with another 7 finer.
