NGC/CAC MS61 1844-D QUARTER EAGLE

Variety 5-J.

The 1844-D is among the more available quarter eagles from this mint but "available" is a relative term with Dahlonega quarter eagles as properly graded Uncirculated examples of any date--especially those with natural color--are truly rare. There are maybe a dozen 1844-D quarter eagles extent in Uncirculated and most are in the MS60 to MS62 range.

Weakness of strike characterizes this issue and this specific example shows a remarkably bold impression with 100% complete definition at the centers. The quality is exceptional for the grade with pleasing natural green-gold color accentuated by subtle underlying reddish-gold in the obverse fields.

The only MS61 example of this date with CAC approval to sell at auction wasa comparable PCGS coin which realized $10,575 as Stacks Bowers 2015 ANA: 10183.

This would make a perfect type coin for the collector seeking one really nice Dahlonega quarter eagle for a set.

CAC has approved three in this grade with two finer (both MS62).
