NUMISMATICALLY SIGNIFICANT PCGS/CAC MS61 1877-S DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1877-S is the first Type Three issue from the San Francisco mint which makes it numismatically significant. Most of the extent Uncirculated 1877-S double eagles grade MS60 to MS62 and this date is rare and pricey in MS63 and higher.
This example is pleasing for the grade with fully frosty surfaces which show marks consistent with the grade. Both sides have acquired an appealing natural orange-gold and rose hue.
The last PCGS/CAC MS61 1877-S double eagle to sell at auction realized $1,998 as Heritage 7/16: 8009.
CAC has approved 17 in this grade with 20 finer.
