The 1897-O is the second scarcest late date eagle from New Orleans after the 1899-O. The 1897-O is a tough coin in properly graded MS62 to MS63 and it is very rare above this range.
This fresh-to-the-market example shows far fewer marks than normal for the date and grade. It is undipped and original with pleasing rose and light orange-gold shadings over frosty surfaces.
The last PCGS MS62 example of this date to sell at auction realized $2,820 as Heritage 9/16: 4970.
