RARE AND UNDERVALUED 1871 EAGLE

Only 1,820 business strike 1871 eagles were made and an estimated 50-60 are known, mostly in EF and the lower AU grades. I've never seen an 1871 eagle with really good eye appeal and even the finest known (a PCGS MS60) is choppy and bright.

This well-detailed example shows enough luster to justify the assigned grade. It lacks deep, original color but so then does virtually every known 1871 eagle.

Only two PCGS AU50 1871 eagles have sold at auction since 2011 and the last one to cross the block brought $4,583 as Heritage 7/15: 3328.

I can think of very few Liberty Head eagles which are this rare but which are less than $5,000 for a nice AU example.
