RARE LOW MINTAGE 1869 EAGLE

Only 1,830 business strike 1869 eagles were struck and an estimated 60-70 are known. When available, the typical example grades EF45 to AU53 and is characterized by excessive abrasions and semi-prooflike to prooflike fields which accentuate the marks.

This piece shows even wear and is less "busy" on the surfaces than normal for the date. The color is an attractive natural deep russet with contrasting reddish-gold at the inner border on the obverse. There is an old dig between stars three and four which seems to be the only thing keeping this coin from an EF45 grade.

The only PCGS EF40 1869 eagle to sell at auction since 1995 brought $6,463 as Heritage 9/16: 4873; this coin was in an older green label holder and seemed a bit undergraded.

Great value for the savvy collector.
