NICE PCGS/CAC AU53 1854-O LARGE DATE EAGLE

The Large Date variety (with a date punch intended for use on silver dollars) is more available than its Small Date counterpart. It becomes fairly scarce in the AU53 to AU55 range and most of the examples in holders are not choice.

This medium green-gold and russet piece shows strong reverse die rotation and it is lustrous with a typical somewhat weak strike as seen on most. The surfaces are clean and I have seen many inferior 1854-O Large Date eagles graded AU55 by both services.

No CAC approved PCGS AU53's have sold at auction. Only two in PCGS AU53 holders have sold since 2009 with the most recent of these bringing $2,820 as Heritage 2013 FUN: 7326.

At less than $3,000 I think this coin is a really good value and it is plenty nice enough to fit into a strong EF/AU set of New Orleans No Motto eagles.

CAC has approved 6 in this grade with 13 finer.
