EXCEPTIONAL OGH 1854-O LARGE DATE EAGLE

Large Date Variety, designated by PCGS.

This crusty coin is housed in an old green label holder and it grades at least a solid AU55 if not AU58 by today's standards.

The 1854-O eagles is seen with two distinct varieties: the Large Date and the Small Date. These are fairly similar in overall rarity but the former seems slightly more available in higher grades. Both issues are hard to locate with natural color and choice surfaces.

This lightly worn example is lustrous and choice with deep rich green-gold color which is contrasted by darker highlights. This appearance is known as the "Euro look" as it is seen on US gold coins which have been found in European banks. Interestingly, this piece is also a minor mint error as it is struck from a strongly rotated reverse die.

No comparable PCGS/OGH examples of this date in AU50 have sold at auction. The last PCGS AU55 brought $3,055 as Heritage 12/15: 4640.
