AFFORDABLE COLLECTOR GRADE 1839 TYPE OF 1838 EAGLE
9/8; Type of 1838 with Large Letters reverse.
The first version of the Liberty Head eagle was made only in 1838 and 1839 and it is easily distinguished by the curved neck in Liberty and the Large Letters reverse. The 1839 is far more available than its counterpart the 1838. In high grades, this issue is scarce and expensive and collector grades examples are always in demand.
This piece has a nice appearance for the grade with deep russet toning overlaid by splashes of orange-gold. The strike shows typical weakness on the stars but is well defined at the centers; the surfaces show a few small, old marks consistent with the assigned grade.
The last PCGS EF40 to sell at auction is this exact coin which brought $3,995 as Stacks Bowers 2016 ANA: 3292.
How often do you get the chance to buy a straight-graded 1839 eagle in a PCGS EF holder for just a touch over four grand?
