RARE UNCIRCULATED 1865 SILVER DOLLAR

As with all the silver coinage dated 1865, significant quantities of 1865 silver dollars were melted or exported and today this is a scarce issue in all grades. There are a few dozen known in Uncirculated and very few of these retain a natural appearance.

This lovely coin shows deep, wholesome toning with blue and green pastels on the obverse and a more golden-orange undertone on the reverse. There is a good deal of luster on both sides and the surfaces are free of significant marks. This was a difficult coin to image and it is not as dark in person as the accompanying photos might suggest.

No PCGS MS61 1865 dollar has ever appeared at auction. An ANACS MS61 sold for $5,405 as Heritage 10/15: 4732.

A nice example of this popular date.
