The 1855-D is the third rarest half eagle from this mint in terms of its overall rarity and the fourth rarest in high grades. Collector quality pieces in the VF and EF ranges are almost never offered for sale and this can be verified by the paucity of auction records for this issue.
I feel that this coin is a full EF40 but PCGS was tough on its grade due to typical weakness of strike at the centers; it should be noted that this weakness is seen even on comparatively high grade 1855-D half eagles. The color is a pleasing, even wheat-gold while the surfaces are clean and choice for the grade.
There are no relevant APR's for this date in VF35.
This is an affordable example of a date which is seldom available with decent eye appeal.
