AU 1848-C HALF EAGLE WITH NATURAL COLOR
Variety 1.
The 1848-C half eagle is common in lower grades but it is scarcer than realized in AU and it is very rare in Uncirculated. The vast majority of surviving pieces have been vigorously scrubbed and lack character as a result.
This well struck example shows deep, even natural green-gold hues with some dirt lodged within the devices and recesses on both sides. There are some old, scattered contact marks which limit the grade but I have seen numerous inferior pieces in AU53 and even AU55 holders.
There are four APR's for the 1848-C half eagle in PCGS AU50 since 2010 and these range from a low of $2,645 to a high of $2,875; none of the aforementioned coins were as choice as the current piece.
A nice, affordable coin with an excellent overall appearance for the grade.
