Medium S mintmark.
Only two No Motto eagles from the San Francisco mint (the 1854-S and the 1856-S) are sometimes available in the higher AU grades. The 1856-S is numerically plentiful in AU55 and AU58 but most of the so-graded coins are very low-end and lack any originality.
This deeply toned example shows rich natural reddish-gold and russet hues over lightly abraded surfaces. The overall appearance is excellent and I haven't seen more than a handful of 1856-S eagles with this depth of color.
No CAC approved approved 1856-S eagles in AU55 have sold at auction. Non-CAC PCGS AU55 pieces with inferior eye appeal to this trade in the $2,000-2,500 range.
This seems like great value at under $2,500 as it is far from common with this excellent overall appearance.
