CHOICE, ORIGINAL PCGS/CAC AU55 1853-O EAGLE
The 1853-O is one of the more available No Motto eagles from New Orleans but it becomes scarce in properly graded AU55 and is very rare in full Uncirculated. Most pieces in AU55 holders lack original color and have been messed with.
This fresh-to-the-market example is wonderfully original with rich natural orange-gold color which is totally "right" for this issue. There is considerable remaining mint luster and were it not for a few small marks clustered in the upper left obverse field, this coin would have merited consideration at the AU58 level.
No PCGS AU55 1853-O eagle has sold at auction since January 2011. An NGC AU55+ with CAC approval brought $4,553 as Stacks Bowers 10/15: 125.
This date is tough to find choicer and there are auction records for PCGS AU58's in excess of $10,000.
CAC has approved 7 in this grade with 8 finer.
