RARE COLLECTOR GRADE 1855-O EAGLE

Variety 2.

The 1855-O is tied with the 1856-O as the sixth rarest of 21 No Motto eagles made at the New Orleans mint. Around 100-125 exist from the original mintage of just 18,000 and most survivors are in the VF-EF range.

This medium green-gold example is well detailed with enough feathers showing to suggest a 35 or 40 grade. The surfaces show some old marks, none of which are deep or detracting.

No auction records are seen for this date since 2008 but three occurred from 2007 to 2008 and they ranged from a low of $2,530 to a high of $3,008.

It is unlikely that another problem-free PCGS graded 1855-O eagle for less than $3,000 will be available anytime soon.
