RARE PCGS AU58 1846-O HALF EAGLE

Of the 100-125 examples known for the date, most grade in the EF40 to AU50 range and even higher grade 1846-O half eagles tend to suffer from poor eye appeal and blatant originality. I have only handled a small number of properly graded AU58's.

This fresh-to-the-market example is very well defined and is solid for the grade with good amounts of luster seen below natural medium yellow and green-gold color. There is almost no actual wear and it is likely that this coin saw no actual circulation. There are a few small marks on the obverse, most notably a semi-circular scrape opposite star twelve.

Only one PCGS AU58 1846-O half eagle has sold at auction since 2005 and it was a seemingly overgraded example which brought a soft $5,060 as Goldberg 5/11: 1494.

This is the second nice 1846-O half eagle I've handled in less than a month but once this coin is placed, it could be years before I handle another high grade example.
